We love horror movies where the monsters are the protagonists, and "Calamity of a Zombie Girl" is a great example of how to pull this off.

The plot is simple: greedy, selfish humans disturb the dead by stealing something that belongs to them. The undead mummies, who are the most sympathetic characters in the entire film, try to get back what is stolen from them.
Also, a backstory that you don't care about, and a plot twist you won't forget.
気の弱い観客は、この映画をただの「ゴミみたいな」Jホラー映画だと切り捨てるだろう。その衝撃的な価値、大げさな暴力、フェティッシュな搾取、憎めない登場人物の憎めない行動、そして度重なるフェード・トゥ・ブラック。

Squeamish viewers will dismiss this film as being just another 'trashy' J-Horror flick. What with its shock value, over-the-top violence, fetish exploitation, unlikeable characters doing unlikeable things, and frequent fades-to-black.
Cultured people, like ourselves, would simply call this film "horror".

西洋のホラー映画では、ハッピーエンドを得るために、人間の登場人物に止められない超自然的な連続殺人鬼を倒してもらいたいものだ。しかし、登場人物があまりに憎めないため、ついモンスターを応援してしまったり、モンスターがあまりに強すぎるため、主人公たちが何をしようとも、最後には難なく勝利してしまったりする。これらすべてが、容赦なく暗いストーリーの中で展開されるため、観る者は何が起こるのか無関心になってしまう。
Not only would we call this 'horror', we would call it that rare monster slasher film made for people who love to root for the monsters.
In western horror films, you want our human characters to defeat the unstoppable supernatural serial killers to earn their happy ending. Yet, either said characters can come across as so unlikeable that you end up rooting for the monsters, or the monsters are so overpowered that they effortlessly win in the end regardless of what the protagonists do. All of this during an unrelentingly dark storyline that leaves the viewer apathetic to what happens.
2人のゾンビ少女の陽気で心温まる関係は、他の多くのジャパニーズ・ホラー作品が達成しようとして失敗した、感情的な深みを感じさせる。真の敵役は憎めず、モンスターの主人公は弱くすることで、「ゾンビ少女の災難」はジャパニーズ・ホラーの常套句に新鮮な風を吹き込んでいる。
The hilarious and heart-warming relationship between the two zombie girls provide a sense of emotional depth that so many other Japanese horror works have tried, and failed, to accomplish. By making the true antagonists unlikeable, and the monster protagonists vulnerable, "Calamity of a Zombie Girl" provides a breath of fresh air to the usual template of Japanese horror.
