マッドハウスの『デスノート』と『コードギアス』が生まれた同じ年に、あるビジュアルノベルもアニメ化された。
その最初のストーリー・アークは、私たちのオリジン・ストーリーだった。
In the same year that gave us Madhouse's Death Note and Code Geass, a certain visual novel also received an anime adaptation.
Its first story arc was our origin story.

その前後に登場した多くの長寿ホラー・フランチャイズと同様、『ひぐらしのなく頃に』の神秘性も、何が起こっているのかが分かれば薄れてしまう。アニメシリーズは、そのような背景がない方がはるかに楽しめるし、最初の物語アーク「鬼隠し編」の映画化は、今でも最も楽しいアークである。
どんな形であれ、ひぐらしを見たことがない人のためにネタバレはしないが、一度わかってしまうと、この大暴露で台無しになるかもしれないことを警告しておこう。
Like many long-running horror franchises that came before and after it, the mystic of "Higurashi: When They Cry" wears off once you figure out what's going on. The anime series is far more enjoyable without that context, and its adaptation of the first story arc - "Onikakushi-hen" (the "Spirited Away by the Demon Chapter") - is still the most enjoyable arc of all.
We won't spoil it if you somehow have never seen Higurashi in any form, but we will warn you that the big reveal might ruin things for you once you've figured it out.
前述の『デスノート』と『コードギアス』に加え、『ひぐらし』は私たちが初めてサイコ・スリラーを観た作品の一部だった。それまでは、悪役や反悪役の主人公がこれほど嬉々として凶悪な行為を行うアニメがあるとは思ってもみなかった。
私たちは、女子学生たちが暗い陰謀の一端を担っているというアイデアに惚れ込んだ。一見普通の人々が不吉な暗黒面を持ち、時折頭をもたげる。そしてまた、もう誰もが知っているように、日本のメディアで最も危険な存在は女子学生なのだ。

In addition to the aforementioned Death Note & Code Geass, Higurashi was part of our first experience watching psychological thrillers. Up until then, we never thought an anime could feature villainous or anti-villainous protagonists who are willing to commit heinous acts with such glee.
We fell in love with the idea of schoolgirls being part of a dark conspiracy. Seemingly normal people with a sinister dark side that occasionally rears its ugly head. Then again, as we should all know by now, the most dangerous beings in all of Japanese media are schoolgirls.
"Truck-kun" wishes they were that hazardous.
この番組を見た後、私たちは二度と同じように女子学生を見ることはなかった。「鬼隠し編」の中心人物、園崎 魅音 と竜宮 レナという2人のキャラクターは、私たちが構想しながらもきちんと完成させることのなかった物語のインスピレーションとなった。そのストーリーはやがて「ヴァンパイア VS サキュバス」に変異し、そのキャラクターたちは吸血鬼ゾーイーと植物少女モリーになった。
We never saw schoolgirls the same way again after watching this show. Onikakushi-hen's central characters, Sonozaki Mion & Ryūgū Rena, became the inspiration for two characters in a story that we conceived but never properly finished. That story eventually mutated into what became "Vampire VS Succubus", and those characters became Zoey the Vampire & Molly the Plant Girl.
いつか、その別の話をする機会があるかもしれない......。
Maybe some day we will get the chance to tell that other story...
